Unspoken Casino Rules And Etiquette

It doesn’t matter whether you are holidaying in Las Vegas and exploring the famous casinos of the Strip, playing cards with billionaires in Monte Carlo, enjoying an evening in Coral Island Casino, or even playing online in your underwear, there will always be common etiquette, behaviour and a few unspoken rules it would be wise to be aware of.

We’ve had a look at some of the most important rules to safeguard you as you prepare to make your next visit to a casino. You can always be sure of a warm welcome at Coral Island Casino, and our dealers, croupiers, and staff will always help explain the games to casino newbies, but knowing the following rules will help make your list even more pleasurable.

If it is your first time visiting a casino, it could be overwhelming and maybe even a little intimidating, as you find yourself faced with a whole new world of rules and systems that could be unfamiliar. But to instil a little confidence and to help feel you belong, it would be advantageous to brush on on your etiquette.

Do not ask your dealer for advice

As mentioned, the friendly dealers at Coral Island Casino will always help explain games and make you feel comfortable and are always open for a bit of chat - after all, they would like to earn tips at the end of the day!

But with that in mind, you should never your dealer for tips or advice on your next play, and there are various reasons for this.

The dealer is there to run the game and to make sure you keep gambling and is employed by the casino, so they are certainly not there to help you win money. It would be unwise for them to dole out advice that could potentially cost their employers a lot of money.

Also, asking for advice could place the dealer in a bit of a tough spot. What if they give advice and then you lose? You’d likely be a little upset with them, which could potentially end with arguments and an unpleasant situation for everyone, as well as slowing down the game for everyone else involved, which could result in players leaving the game and the casino losing money.

Taking time to learn the basics of the game, how to play, and the basic rules, could save you and the dealer a lot of time. Even a basic understanding of the game and how it is played will help keep other players at the table and everything running smoothly.

Why not take a look at our guide for casino newbies?

Don’t tell other people and players what to do

What would you do if you were sat with another player who keeps making the same plays, the same mistakes and seemingly throwing his money away? Common decency would suggest reaching out and trying to teach him a thing or two or suggesting a different tactic.

However, the rule in this situation is to resist doing just that, which may require some serious willpower, unless the player has specifically asked you for tips and advice (in which case, heed the above point about asking and giving advice!).

By approaching a stranger - albeit with good intentions - who appears to need help, you can risk upsetting the player and causing an unpleasant situation, particularly if they do not like being told what to do with their money by a stranger.

Personal space

Nobody enjoys having someone hanging over their shoulder watching what they’re doing, whether that’s at work, at home, or in the casino. If someone was doing that to you at the table, watching you make your every decision or pestering you with questions or conversation, it’s likely to make you uncomfortable and possibly angry.

Try to keep out of others’ personal spaces, give them room to play their game and enjoy their casino experience. Most players at the slots, for example, enjoy a little solitude and the chance to get away from people for a while.

Mind your Ps & Qs

Minding your manners might seem like common sense, but some think, especially in online situations, that they have the right to be rude to other players and casino staff without any consideration for their feelings.

The live tables at a casino are a social environment, and sometimes a bit of banter can be part of the competitive territory, but certain lines should never be crossed. If you find you are having issues with the way another player is behaving, then the best thing to do is simply leave the table and walk away.

The worst thing you can do is to try fighting fire with fire and escalate the situation into a shouting match. Maybe you are completely right, and the other player needs to be told that his behaviour is unacceptable, but the chances are that their behaviour shows they don’t care what you think. Be the bigger person and walk away.

Don’t take too long

It can be very frustrating for other players when someone takes ages to make their play. In online poker games, players hate the ‘slow player’ and can annoyed when they take too long.

But it can be an issue for new players who are still figuring out the game, and if other players start making remarks, it can damage your confidence, ultimately making you take longer to make your decision.

Players are allowed to consider their moves and take a little time to deliberate their next play, but even if you are new, do try to keep up with the flow of the game.

If you are getting impatient at the time it’s taking another player to make their move, just keep in mind that everyone has to start from somewhere and learn the game.

More etiquette to keep in mind

We all should know that counting cards is very much frowned upon at the casino, the same can be said for working together with another player at the table. Players working together gain an unfair advantage over the other players. It’s also considered to be very poor sportsmanship, and simply should not be done.

One poker tip for newbies is that should you fold your hand of cards, never discuss the folded cards with anyone, as it can give the other players an indication of what cards are now no longer in play, and create an unfair game.

Of course, there are some differences in etiquette between land-based and online casinos - it’s unlikely you’d be allowed into a land-based casino in your PJs, but your loungewear is just fine for online! But as a simple rule of thumb, if you wouldn’t behave that way in a land-based, bricks-and-mortar casino, then don’t behave that way in an online casino!
